Managing in a remote world requires some adjustments to the traditional management methods, as communication and collaboration may be more challenging when team members are not in the same physical location. A small but noticeable challenge for me was ending remote meetings. Lots of fumbled "see you later" and even a "see you on the other side of things" felt just as uncomfortable for me as I imagine it did for my team. Here are some tips on how to manage in a remote world:

  1. Establish clear expectations and goals: Make sure your team understands their responsibilities and the goals of the project. This includes setting clear deadlines, defining metrics for success, and outlining communication protocols.

  2. Use technology to your advantage: There are many tools available for remote communication and collaboration, such as video conferencing, instant messaging, project management software, and file-sharing platforms. Take advantage of these tools to stay connected with your team and keep everyone on the same page.

  3. Communicate regularly: Communication is critical in a remote environment. Schedule regular check-ins with your team members to ensure they are on track and address any concerns they may have. I found myself randomly checking in on my team. Checking the status of outstanding projects and offering support. This was often met with a lot of "yes, everything is going well" leaving me with unclear assessments of open goals. Schedule meetings and have an agenda. Provide your team members with these tools to set them up for success. Use video conferencing when possible, as it helps to build stronger relationships than just written communication.

  4. Build trust: Trust is essential in any team, but even more so in a remote environment where you may not have the opportunity to meet face-to-face regularly. Foster an environment of trust by being transparent, reliable, and open to feedback.

  5. Prioritize work-life balance: Working remotely can blur the line between work and personal life. Encourage your team members to take breaks and prioritize their well-being. Consider implementing flexible work hours to accommodate different time zones and personal obligations.

  6. Provide opportunities for social connection: Social interaction is an essential aspect of team building. Organize virtual team-building activities, celebrate milestones and achievements, and encourage casual conversations to build a sense of community.

By following these tips, you can effectively manage in a remote world and maintain a productive and positive team environment. Reach out and tell me your struggles managing in a remote world!
